//Triumphal Entry By Snoop Dogg
The 14th annual MTV Europe Music Awards opened with show host and hip hop debonair Snoop Dogg making a triumphal entry onto the Olympiahalle stage in Munich. In a vintage low-rise Cadillac emblazoned with the German flag, Snoop Dogg was accompanied by leather-clad female motorcycle outriders and a full posse of female admirers. Around 40 million votes were registered in the MTV EMAs, which totally reinvented itself in 2007 to allow viewers and music fans to take control of nominations and voting for the all-new Award categories.
//Meet The Hottest New Sound Of Europe
The search was wide and long as MTV scoured a continent for the hottest new act to be rocking Europe, and after tens of millions of votes, the answer came back loud and clear. The winner of MTV’s New Sounds of Europe, presented by Sony Ericsson, is… Estonia’s Bedwetters. The band formed in 2004 and after a few line-up changes – Joosep Järvesaar, Mihkel Mõttus, Karl-Kristjan Kingi, Kaspar Koppel and Rauno Kutti had won a New Band competition, made their first video and were on the road to Europe wide success. Now with a global audience of millions having watched them close the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, their destiny is in their hands.
//Free Your Mind Winner
MTV's Free Your Mind Award went to 15-year old Swedish boy, Anton Abele, who in 2007 inspired the largest demonstration in Swedish history – attended by over 12,000 people. “Anton is an inspiration to young people in Sweden and around the world. I am proud that MTV is able to recognise such an amazing individual. I believe that there are millions of young people like Anton around the world, determined the make their world a better place. By accepting the MTV Free Your Mind Award at this year’s EMAs I hope he will inspire them to stand up and say ‘no’ to violence.” Said Bill Roedy, Vice Chairman, MTV Networks.
//Ultimate Urban, Headliner & Inter Act
There was no other choice for the Ultimate Urban Award 2007 - Rihanna's had it down. ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ saw Rihanna working with some of the biggest names on the scene, while ‘Umbrella’ dropped in at number 1 and stayed there. With a light show that makes Star Wars look like a seventies throwback and a sound system that measures on the Richter scale, Muse have definitely earned your Headliner Award. Tokio Hotel has been one of Germany's best kept secrets, but this year the rest of the world cottoned on. Their hard hitting, guitar crunching sound has been shaking the global scene – a genuine global phenomenon and Inter Act naturals.
//Artist Choice Winner
In what was a whirlwind trip, Amy Winehouse touched down for a last minute rehearsal at the EMAs 2007 and pulled off a show stopping performance of ‘Back To Black’. She was rewarded for her efforts though with a special accolade, the 'Artists Choice' award. Put together over the last six months, MTV news crews around the world canvassed over 80 artists to pick their favourite fellow artist of the year – a peer who'd made the biggest impression. Big names in their droves, from Rihanna to Maroon 5, Fergie to Alicia Keys named Amy as their nomination... in the end she received over half of the votes, something of a landslide.
//Red Carpet Stars
Strutting down the Olympiahalle red carpet were a host of celebrities from the music, entertainment, fashion and sporting worlds including British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, actor Jared Leto, glamorous British supermodel Lily Cole, Napoleon Dynamite star Jon Heder, R&B sensation and one third of Destiny’s Child, Kelly Rowland, German sporting icon Boris Becker, Craig David, Babyshambles, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, Good Charlotte, Joss Stone, Michael Stipe, System of a Down’s Serj Tankian, Muse and our very own digital host, Wyclef Jean.
//Album of the Year
2007's Album of the Year went to the ever versatile first lady of the R'n'B scene, the promiscuous Nelly Furtado. Working alongside legendary producer Timbaland, Nelly brought us ‘Loose’, a fusion of R'n'B and heavy guitar riffs that have kept dancefloors banging for a year now. Remember that this is the album that dropped ‘Promiscuous’ and ‘Maneater’ and you'll get an understanding of how established the sound has become. Nelly herself describes it as punk-hop but you can hear influences from the Eurythmics to Queens of the Stone Age. The one thing it's all got is sass, brass and dirty rotten class.
//Best Band & Most Addictive Track
Linkin Park is a musical institution defining the sound of a generation and their latest album redefined them again. From the moment MTV premiered the first single off ‘Minutes To Midnight’ it was clear Linkin Park was back with something new and you voted them Best Band! On the other side of the tracks, Avril Lavigne has been dropping a sound that's so addictive no wonder you gave her our Most Addictive Track Award. ‘Girlfriend’ is one of those classic tracks that you hear once and swear you've known it for years – and ain't that what pop is all about? Dance floors have never been deadlier than when ‘Girlfriend’ drops…
//Solo Artist, Rock Out & Video Star
Avril Lavigne is a proper pop queen. When ‘Sk8er Boy’ landed back in 2002, she brought an attitude that blew apart US pop. Since then Avril has grown up but her sound is still sensational and 2006's ‘Best Damn Thing’ pretty much earned her an award for being the best damn thing! Or Best Act 2007 as we like to call it. The competition was fierce in our one and only Rock Out category, but only one act could win, and the prestigious Award went to 30 Seconds to Mars. Finally, the Video Star MTV would like to say thanks to because they’ve rocked our world in 2007 is French electro duo Justice. Congratulations to you all!
